Buying a gorgeous water feature is an enjoyable process. You can spend a long time picking just the right design with just the right level of water movement to enhance your garden in the way you want. Then you can spend time deciding where it needs to be located within your garden. After that, when it’s all installed, you can sit back and enjoy the serene look and sound of the trickling water for many years to come.
Or rather, that’s what you might hope, but there is a little more to it than that. When you have a water feature, there will be some maintenance required, especially if it’s fairly old and could look better. Therefore, here are some ways you can make your old water feature look better so you – and anyone else who goes into your garden – can enjoy it more.
Remove Stubborn Stains
Gently cleaning your water feature on a regular (perhaps monthly) basis is a good idea. You’ll need to drain the water and switch off the pump before you clean the inside and outside, making it look just like new. However, sometimes you’ll find stubborn stains have appeared – this is entirely natural, but they’re not so easy to get rid of.
You have two options when it comes to stains like these. You can either leave them and try to ignore them, or you can remove them. The latter is the best approach for keeping your water feature looking great over the years, but of course, it involves a little more hard work.
The best thing to do is soak the stains in a mixture of vinegar or bleach and water. Test this mixture out on an unseen part of the water feature to ensure it will work, and then allow the vinegar or bleach to sit on the actual stain for fifteen minutes or so. Wipe it away, and the stain should be gone.
Change The Pump
As is the case for most mechanical elements, at some point, the pump in your water feature will need to be replaced. If you find that the water is running more slowly than it used to or perhaps has stopped entirely, it could be that the pump now needs to be replaced. This is not too arduous a task, and you can find some high-quality and great value pumps for water feature online that will work in your particular water feature.
It’s best to get a new pump as soon as you see a change in the way your water feature is working. If you leave it too long, the faulty pump could damage the water feature, and at the very least, you’re only putting off the inevitable. Once this change has been made, you’ll be amazed at the difference.
Paint It
If your water feature needs a little more than a clean and a new pump to keep it looking its best, why not paint it? This might sound strange, but if you get good quality masonry paint that will stick to the stone, or varnish that will work on wood (depending on the material your water feature is made from), you can not only make your water feature look like new again, but you can even change the way it looks altogether.
There you have it: three ways to make your old water feature look better this year.
