How To Care For Plantation Shutters?

Plantation shutters can keep your home safe during storms, from robbers, and environmental factors such as humidity. They can also allow you to keep noise out and enjoy a relaxing atmosphere.

However, you must care for these shutters properly to enjoy high durability. If you have gotten plantation shutters in Blackheath, here are the top ways you can maintain them.

  1. Use Appropriate Products

Plantation shutters are mainly made of wood, so you should be careful during the deep cleaning. The material is sensitive to some chemicals and can suffer damage if you use an incorrect product. Typically, you should avoid using store-bought cleaners.

Making a mixture of lemon oil and water or mild detergent and water is better for deep cleaning. You may also use a cloth with a small amount of spray polish to wipe the shutter. Be sure not to wet the wood completely because it can cause discolouring.

  1. Wipe The Shutter Daily With Dry Cloth

Deep cleaning should only be performed once or twice every year. However, you should still clean the plantation shutter regularly. Using a dry cloth to wipe away dust from the surface is suitable for sanitizing the furniture piece.

You can wipe the shutter using a dry microfiber cloth and work your way down from the top slats. A vacuum cleaner on a low setting with a small brush is also suitable for wiping. However, you must be careful when using electronic cleaning tools.

  1. Wipe The Shutter With Damp Cloth Weekly

Besides daily cleaning, you should sanitize the shutter using a damp microfiber cloth weekly. This will help you get rid of dirt accumulation in the hinges and other parts of the shutter. Some particles are also more stubborn and cannot be removed with a dry microfiber cloth.

This is why weekly cleaning is necessary to improve the lifespan of your plantation shutter. It also eliminates the need to perform frequent deep cleaning. So you will not have to worry about spending long hours on maintenance.

  1. Clean Hinges From The Outside

Most owners neglect the exterior hinges when cleaning plantation shutters. However, they are an integral part of the covering and affect the movement. You should clean the hinges from the outside every month using a brush.

It is also best to check the shutter for squeaky noise or hindered movement. If you face these issues, you must lubricate the hinges using a small amount of oil. Typically, you should apply the fluid under the head of the pin of hinges.

After that, you should check if the issue has been resolved by opening and closing the shutters a few times.

Closing Thoughts

This is all you need to know about how to care for plantation shutters in Blackheath. These four cleaning methods will help you improve the lifespan of your covering. It will also enhance safety and prevent the shutter from coming off the frame due to degradation.

The best part is that if you maintain your shutters in Blackheath correctly, they will last for decades. So you can save on the repair and replacement costs by cleaning your plantation shutters weekly.
